Resume and cover letter editing and interview guide for a PhD holder's application to a top tech company,
Research presentation coaching for a postdoc job interview,
Recommendation letter editing for an application to a university professor,
My STEM professional friends sometimes share their concerns about research-related writing and presentations with me. Despite their outstanding technical abilities, they find that their writing and presentations don't always yield the expected results.
I have accumulated extensive writing and presentation experience in both academia and industry, engaging with people from diverse backgrounds. While I've been sharing my accumulated experience with friends and helping them with their writing and presentation concerns, I've noticed that there are inefficient communication patterns that most people show.
<Common ineffective communication patterns>
- Failure to explain the contributions and impact of the applicant's work objectively or omission of such information
- Lack of evidence that shows autonomy
- Too generic, copy-paste-like, and non-specific research plans or career motivations that fail to differentiate from other applicants
- Expressions that appear to show lack of confidence or, conversely, could be misinterpreted as excessive arrogance
- (Perhaps due to familiarity with the content) incoherent structure leading to logical gaps or omission of key information
- Reliance on subjective descriptions or position titles instead of objective evidence of one's capabilities
- Redundant content appears to be an attempt to lengthen the writing
- [Important 1] Contents without considering how to induce reader (or audience) responses aligned with the communication goal
- [Important 2] (Above all) Insufficient to capture interest
I provided specific feedback on these issues, and everyone reported great satisfaction with the significant improvements in their writing or presentation outcomes. Additionally, using those improved results, surprisingly, most of them achieved their desired job hunting goals.
Such experiences gave me the confidence to offer this service, hoping that it might be helpful to others experiencing similar difficulties.
